Austrians abroad often describe missing Gemütlichkeit, a cosy, unhurried warmth that belongs to a good café, a mountain hut or a family table. It is less a thing than a pace of life.

Regional pride

As in many European countries, people's first loyalty is often to their own region or valley. Dialects, food and traditions vary, and people are proud of their own. Coffee house mornings and mountain afternoons are the two halves of Austria that people carry with them.
